FrontlineSMS launches its browser based SMS platform

Two years after the redesign of FrontlineSMS open-source SMS software began, the software’s developer will today launch a new browser-based SMS software around the world dubbed FrontlineSMS Version 2.

Browser-based and built to run on Windows, Mac and Linux, the software does not need the Internet to work. Frontline SMS says it’s redesigned into a simpler to use browser-based software for both offline users and web based.

“Our open-source SMS-messaging software helps organizations all over the world overcome communications barriers. It enables users to send, receive, and manage SMS over a mobile network. Users only pay the standard text messaging charges through their regular mobile provider,” said Laura Walker Hudson, FrontlineSMS CEO.

Hudson said FrontlineSMS Version 2 is a redesign of the developer’s software built upon extensive input and feedback from those using the software across the world.

The redesign makes the software more intuitive, simpler to extend and run over networks, and makes it easier to manage larger volumes of messages.

The new architecture will both strengthen the foundation of the software and create a more flexible system that allows developers and users to customize FrontlineSMS to more effectively meet their needs, and easily integrate with other programs.

The launch event will today be live at the iHub in Nairobi and another in Washington, D.C. while the London launch will take place on the 18th June.

The launch event will comprise of live demonstrations of the software from the FrontlineSMS staff, users and developers across the world.

FrontlineSMS CEOs Laura Walker Hudson who will also speak early next at the London launch will spearhead the Nairobi launch.

FrontlineSMS has long targeted those without access to Internet enabling them send offline emails just like SMS’s.

Kenya has around 40 million people but only 13.4 million have access to internet and the service’s offline mails help people track and report incidents or even trade without internet access but as internet penetration grows,a browser based software is timely.

Globally, there is an estimated population of 7 billion with over 2.3 billion with access to the internet therefore the redesign is a plus for both offline and browser based SMS software users.
