The app developer competition known as Nokia Hack, will bring over 100 developers to work through 48 hours to come up with apps to be included in the Nokia Ovi store.
“Through Nokia Hack, we want to recognize and reward local app developers by giving them a platform to create their best apps with Qt,” Peter Karimi, Business Development Manager EDX, Nokia East Africa said.
Qt is the Nokia development platform.
“We will also work closely with them to refine the apps for publishing on Nokia Store and have already seen great traction in East Africa and globally for downloads of these smartphone apps,” Kirimi added.
Nokia has in the past held Nokia hackathons, recently being the Ignite Hackathon held in March this year. This competition saw over 80 developers come up with applications. A gaming app by Steve Mugo, Spot Kick made it becoming the eventual final winner.
Peter Karimi added: “The first hackathon was very successful and saw over 80 developers participate. We hope to get well over 100 registrations for this one, and encourage developers to take advantage of this great opportunity to showcase their talent.”
The Nokia Hack will have three levels of winners. The overall winner will receive a whooping KSh1 million shilling (US$ 12,000).
The first and second runners up will each receive Kshs 300,000 (US$3,500) and Kshs 100,000 (US$1,200) respectively.
Applications are now open and will close on June 18. The event will be held at Nairobi’s Startup Garage, Piedmont Plaza 4th Floor.
