New tailored trends focused on making Twitter more user-relevant

Social media website Twitter has announced an enhancement to its trending topics feature. The default trends will now only show trending topics relevant to the users, based on their locations and who they follow on.

This features aims at improving the relevance of the trends each user sees.

Before this announcement, Twitter’s trending topics and the algorithm used was based on a non-personalised view where a user would choose to see what’s trending in a specific city or country — or worldwide.

This new feature will be available on both the Twitter website and its mobile apps, says Twitter’s product manager Sara Mauskopf. However, the new personalised trends view will be the default view.

Twitter has been tweaking and adding new features to its offering in a way to personalise the experience for both users, and to offer more regulated and targeted services for marketers, as recently reported by HumanIPO on the launch of Twitter Events.

The new tweak to trending topics will assist in highlighting topical news amongst a user’s circle of friends and those she follows. It will also help in filtering most of the trending topics that are of no interest to the user.

Tailored Trends would not be available immediately to all Twitter users as they would be gradually rolled out and made available — first on both the Twitter for Android App and Twitter for iOS Apps.
