Doctor’s mobile phone used to track murder suspects

The Somerset West Magistrate’s court, in South Africa, heard yesterday Dr Louis Heyns’ mobile phone was used to track the men involved with his murder.

News24 reported Hannes Niemand, investigating and warrant officer, as saying in an affidavit he had followed Heyns’ mobile phone activities on May 22, when Heyns was declared missing.

Heyns’ mobile phone activities led to the arrest of Sarel and Marthinus van der Walt one week later. Following the discovery of Heyns’ body in a shallow grave Niemand began taking statements from the two arrested brothers.

The statements then allegedly revealed Heyns’ vehicle had been sold to a businessman in Malmesbury, who was subsequently arrested a day after the two brothers.

Samantha Raphaels, the case’s prosecutor read out the affidavit during the businessman’s bail application.

However, the state opposed his bail release due to him being charged with schedule six offences, defeating the ends of justice and robbery as an accessory.

Meanwhile, according to Henk Carstens, the lawyer representing the van der Walt brothers, they have abandoned their bail applications.
