Apple has announced the launch of its streaming music service iTunes Radio, offering over 200 stations with “an incredible catalogue of music from the iTunes Store”.
Announced at the opening of the WWDC annual developers conference in San Francisco, iTunes Radio will be available for free to users willing to listen to advertisements and for US$25 per month for an advertisement-free service.
iTunes Radio will highlight songs trending on Twitter and also offer access to themed radio playlists. Users can also create their own stations based on genres as well as artists.
The service will be part of the new iOS 7 and also be available through iTunes desktop apps on Mac OS and Windows, as well as on Apple TV, though availability will be restricted to the United States.
Apple chief executive officer called the new iOS 7 operating system “the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone”, which will overhaul the look of touchcreens on iPhones and iPads.
Apple also introduced revamped MacBook Airs, as well as a preview of the new Pro, to be released this year, which will double the performance of the current model, launched three years ago.
