Nedbank South Africa, through its spokesperson, has said the mobile app initially scheduled for launch in May by its chief executive Mike Brown will now be launched towards the end of June.
Currently in South Africa, only First National Bank (FNB) and Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) – both owned by First Rand Group Ltd – have a mobile banking app for their customers.
In an interview with Talk Radio 702 in February this year, Mike Brown mentioned that they had been working on some technology projects, which included rolling out numerous apps.
Brown said: “We’ve done a lot of work around the encryption etc. required to make sure that the security and app environment is water tight. And you will be seeing an app from Nedbank shortly, with those enhanced security features.”
Apart from Nedbank, FNB and RMB, only ABSA Bank had indicated it was looking to launch a mobile banking app. This was scheduled to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2011 and did not happen as “they experienced problems with their back-end system.”
The sentiment from most of South Africa’s banks as recently expressed by Capitec Bank seems to be that their mobile banking services are adequate to cater for their customer’s needs, and that developing a mobile app wouldn’t be necessary at this stage.
