Google helps African universities access Internet

Inoorero University is one of the beneficiaries of Google Apps Supporting Programme (GASP). The programme has helped the university complete its Local Area Network.

In its website, Google describes the programme as “an Initiative designed to catalyze Internet usage and Google Apps adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa universities through the provisioning of Google Apps for Education.”

“Google will support your institution through the deployment process using Google Apps Deployment partners,” it added.

Inoorero University yesterday announced the completion of their Local Area Network, a project that started in November last year. Now the campus has Internet connection, thanks to the programme.

Google is working with Kenyan Universities to provide ubiquitous access to the Internet on campus as well as improve the experience of users.

The programme is available in different African countries including Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

Inoorero University and Strathmore University in Kenya are the only campuses that are being supported under this programme.

In Nigeria, four universities, University of Nigeria, University of Benin, Covenant University and University of Lagos are under the programme.

South Africa has only two universities being supported under the Gaps programme including the University of Free State and Vaal University of Technology.

The countries selected for the programme are known to have strong broadband connection to help spur the deployment of the Google Apps.
