ANC slams Eastern Cape DA councillor for racist email

The African National Congress (ANC) has slammed Stanford Slabbert, an Eastern Cape Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, for reportedly sending a racist email.

The DA suspended Slabbert following his circulated email containing racist slurs. Among these slurs, the email reportedly said president Jacob Zuma had more wives than brain cells.

Furthermore, the Times Live quoted Slabbert’s email as saying the ANC produce “dumb idiots who wait for handouts”.

Furthermore, the email suggested Zuma is leading a country which houses a quarter of schoolgirls being HIV-positive because South Africans “spread the disease more than anyone else in the world”.

Jackson Mthembu, spokesperson for the ANC, said: “Had it not been exposed by the ANC during the presidency’s budget vote debate last week, it like many others would have gone unnoticed, unpunished and acceptable within the DA.”

However, Athol Trollip, leader of the DA in the Eastern Cape, said it was an individual who made the comments and not the DA.

“He’s going to have to accept the consequences of his actions and he has really brought our party into disrepute. I’ve not made an apology. It wasn’t the DA or myself [who made the comments], it was Stanford Slabbert,” said Trollip.

Trollip then pointed the finger at the ANC, saying some of its members made racist comments without any subsequent disciplinary processes.

He said the DA would conduct a disciplinary hearing into Slabbert’s conduct because he and other DA members had worked to establish a non-racist image for the party and such discrimination would not be tolerated.
