World Bank to roll out ICT hubs across Africa

The World Bank, after developing two ICT incubation hubs in Kenya, is now considering rolling out various similar centres in other parts of Africa, says Infodev’s programme manager Valerie D’Costa.

Speaking during the Open Innovation Africa Summit (OIAS) in Nairobi, D’Costa said the World Bank is studying various incubation centres in Kenya to replicate their success in other countries in Africa.

The innovation hubs are open space for the technologist, investors and technology companies.

Now Kenya has more than five incubation hubs churning out entrepreneurs through organized hackathons, entrepreneur forums and links entrepreneurs with venture capitalists from across the world aimed at building capacities and link entrepreneurs with venture capitalists.

Nokia and infodev set up the hubs through a global partnership program in the Financial and Private Sector Development Network of the World Bank Group set aside to serve the growing technology community.
The conference themed Leadership in Innovation was focused on the leadership required to drive acceleration of African entrepreneurship and innovation, in order to reach ambitious targets for socio-economic development across the continent.

Nairobi’s Safari Park hotel hosted the forum with over 200 of Africa’s top policy makers, developers, entrepreneurs and private enterprises attending.
