The Rwandan government has started a citizen-centred initiative that will spearhead social and economic development through the power of ICT.
Smart Rwanda Days is also a business-friendly, accessible, sustainable information and service delivery chain that will be realised through public-private partnerships.
The government partnered with the World Bank to bring together global and Rwandan ICT and economy experts to chart the way forward for Smart Rwanda Days.
“Key to the success of Smart Rwanda is sustainability of all our interventions. Our strategy will be to rely on the much needed private sector resources and capabilities,” said Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Rwanda’s minister for youth and ICT.
“Smart Rwanda aims at looking at all innovative ways ICT can drive to achieve socio-economic transformation agenda of our country.”
He added the initiative will seek to leverage all gains made in the field of ICT, mainly available infrastructure that will help the country advance.
A focus on smart healthcare, governance, business, agriculture, environment, job creation and infrastructure is also on the cards for the programme.
Carolyn Turk, World Bank country manager, said: “I appreciate Rwanda’s extraordinary achievements registered in the ICT sector over the past few years. When you look at mobile penetration and connectivity by broadband, it’s quite outstanding.”
