TNM Mobile Money and Malawi’s Central Region Water Board have partnered to enable citizens to pay water bills via mobile money.

Sumaice Musamaleke, finance manager of TNM Central Region, said the mobile money company aims to simplify its customer’s lives by saving them time with the new solution which does not require standing in a line or transport.

Musamaleke spoke at a partnership event earlier this month in Lilongwe.

The service is activated through customer registration on TNM Mpamba mobile money, through which bill payments are activated with a PIN code.

Mobile payments of bills are more economic at a cost of K50 (US$0.15), lower than costs impending through traditional payment method.

According to Louis Chipofya, business development manager at TNM, the payment facility is flexible and aimed at lower income users,Technology Banker reported.

Zephelino Mitumba, press relations and administrative officer at Capital Region Water Board (CRWB), said mobile money will simplify water bill payments for consumers without the waiting required for cash offices to be open.

TNM Mpamba will ensure payment fulfilment, despite possible offline occurrences.

The mobile payment network has 18,000 subscribers as gained from its launch in May 2013.

The Malawian Water Board’s collaboration follows several other companies’ compliance such as Multichoice GOtv, Debonairs and PTC.
