iPhones are the preserve of the rich and Android the poor, according to an interactive Twitter map, which also highlights the continued popularity of BlackBerry in Africa.
The map, produced by MapBox and tweeted by tech and telecoms expert Benedict Evans, pulls together data from GNIP and Twitter which lights up spots every time someone tweets.
In contrast to the United States, which is currently lit up with a range of colours signifying the different mobile devices used, the African continent is almost totally in blackout, apart from faint spots in more developed areas such as Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Similarly, while the brights spots in the West are almost exclusively red (signifying high iPhone usage), Africa’s urban centres shine in purple (the colour used to show BlackBerry use).
The Nairobi colours show a healthy presence of Android tweeters (green), but in Lagos particularly the purple (BlackBerry) almost wipes out its rivals.
