Poor network coverage responsible for armed robberies in Ghana – communications minister

Ghana’s minister of communications Edward Omane-Boamah has said cases of armed robbery are more prominent in areas with poor network coverage.

According to the minister, activities of robbers are aided by the inability of victims to call for help.

“In Ghana, it is noted that armed robbers often attack travellers on sections of the road or areas which have no coverage as this makes it easier for them to operate without anyone being able to call for help,” he said.

He therefore appealed to network operators in Ghana to expand their network coverage, especially to rural areas.

This, according to the minister, would make communication services available to more Ghanaians and will also improve the use of technology in more rural areas.

Omane-Boamah also encouraged the networks to introduce a technology that would help tackle those who use telecoms services outside the country free of charge.
