Tigo Rwanda customers to use ATMs for mobile transactions

Tigo Rwanda subscribers can now buy airtime, recover SIM cards, receive and send money day and night after the company launched ATM machines.

The machines, known as Tigo-Matic, are said to be the first of their kind in Africa.

“This is a smart innovation that promotes the digital lifestyle we want Rwandans to adopt,” said Jean Philbert Nsengimana, the Youth and ICT minister.

“I would like to thank banks and telecom firms for partnering to ensure we move towards a cashless and paperless economy with financial inclusion.”

Tigo has installed two ATM machines at Muhima and Nyabugogo so far.

Diego Camberos, Tigo’s chief executive officer (CEO), said the innovation would provide a new digital lifestyle, adding that they would also save time.

“Implementing this solution is part of our strategy to meet the ever growing expectations of subscribers,” Camberos said.

The government of Rwanda is currently seeking to move from an agriculture-based economy to an information–based economy through such innovations.
