Upcoming African Startup Events, 19-30 June

Startup events present the opportunity for entrepreneurs to value their efforts as well as market their innovations. Here’s everything you need to know about upcoming technology events in Kenya and South Africa in a week.

Fireside Chat with Louis Otieno (GM Microsoft)
When: 21st June
Where: iHub, Nairobi

Fireside chat is random meetup organized by iHub where entrepreneurs, investors and mentors gather to hang out and share ideas. Every fireside Chat has a designated speaker. This month’s speaker will be Louis Otieno, Microsoft’s General Manager for East and Southern Africa (ESA). He is responsible for Microsoft’s overall business management and strategic development in the region. He is also part of the Leadership Team that steers Microsoft’s business in the West, East, Central Africa & the Indian Ocean Islands (WECA).

ANIC (African News Innovation Challenge) Workshop
When: 22nd June
Where: iHub, Nairobi

ANIC is a news challenge keen to reach out to developers, web creatives, bloggers, and other digital pioneers who can offer digital projects that have the potential to improve the way that journalists collect, process, and disseminate news. ANIC is also looking for ideas for disruptive business models, that will help wean the media off advertising by diversifying media’s revenue streams. Participant ideas could win them a share of the $1m in seed grants. A 3hr workshop and brainstorming session for the News Challenge will be held at the iHUB on June 22nd.

Nokia Hackathon
When: 23rd-24th June
Where: Startup Garage, Piedmont Plaza, Ngong Road, Nairobi.

The Nokia Hackathon is a 48 hr developer contest for Nokia QT. 100 developers will be put in a room for 48 hrs. to come up with the best Qt apps The best app will win Kshs 1 Million at the end of the Hackathon.

- South Africa
Software Architecture: NoSQL Databases – Hbase and MongoDB
When: 19th June
Where: Codebridge, Campus Town, Cape Town

Software Architecture Meetup is an event whose goal is to understand the purpose of the database (especially in comparison to the other NoSQL databases), when you would use it, and maybe when you would not. Simon Kelly will give an introduction to Hbase, and Bradley Whittington will give an overview of MongoDB for about 20 minutes to half an hour each, with some discussion afterwards.
