Entertainment channel provider GOtv has launched a new option, GOtv Open, designed to comply with new requirements to provide a minimum number of free-to-air channels.
The new bouquet will cost KSh2,600 (US$30) and will give subscribers access to free-to-air channels without paying a monthly subscription.
Speaking during the launch Felix Kyengo, GOtv’s general manager, said the new addition will provide the best solution for television consumers to receive their local free to air channels in digital quality for the once off administration fee.
The new launch is in line with the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) directive which requires all pay-TV providers to give unlimited access to at least five free-to-air channels.
The current single price offer includes a GOtv decoder, GOtenna (outdoor antenna) and one month subscription to GOtv Plus.
GOtv only offered the GOtv and GOtv Plus bouquets packed with local and international channels on which subscribers had to pay monthly fees to access even the free-to-air channels.
HumanIPO reported last month StarTimes, one of the pay TV providers, had launched a similar service where customers could access free-to-air channels without being charged for subscription fees.
The moves come ahead of the digital migration deadline of 2015, which requires all African countries to turn off their analogue transmission.
