The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has taken its “drive slow” protest campaign against the contentious e-tolling system in Gauteng, South Africa, to Pretoria.
COSATU reportedly began the protest action on End Street in Hatfield at 8am.
Dumisani Dakile, COSATU’s Gauteng provincial secretary, said the motorcade will proceed towards the east on the N4, then south on the N1 and finally onto the R21 towards the airport and will then take the Nelmapius off-ramp.
Furthermore the motorcade will again enter the R21 north to Pretoria and will end at the Fountains Valley in Eufees Road.
“The go-slow is to raise public awareness of the campaign to scrap the e-tolling system in the province of Gauteng,”Fin24 quoted Dakile as saying.
Once COSATU has successfully executed the motorcade protest, the union federation will then march to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital where they will send their well wishes to the ailing Nelson Mandela, the iconic former president of South Africa, according to theSouth African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
HumanIPO reported yesterday the Department of Transport (DoT) is considering cutting the e-tolling tariffs further.
Gauteng’s e-tolling system was supposed to begin in April 2011, but three subsequent proposed starting dates were also not met.
