Whistleblowing site WikiLeaks has hit out at US president Barack Obama after he toured the Robben Island cell of former South African president Nelson Mandela, blaming the US government for having been behind the ailing icon’s arrest in 1962.
Citing an article by the Chicago Tribune in 1990, WikiLeaks said Obama’s recent trip was to distract from the facts of the CIA’s involvement in the apartheid period.
In a Twitter post today, WikiLeaks said:
As #Obama tours #Mandela‘s cell, trying to distract, remember, the #CIA was behind Mandela’s imprisonment: http://t.co/1XCV0yJJ9C …

The Tweet has since been retweeted hundreds of times, with Mandela already trending in a number of countries as his poor health continues to command headlines across the world.
The Mandela family feuds have also resulted in condemnation from users of social media.
