The Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones App has been updated with two new features, the main one being the addition of “Facebook Groups.”
Recent reports have indicated that Facebook Mobile Ads perform much better than their Desktop counterparts making it crucial for the social network, along with its partners, to create a much richer and more captivating user experience on mobile devices rather than desktops.
Also, new data shows that more people are accessing not only the Internet in general but also Facebook on mobile devices, especially in Africa.
With this in mind, Blackberry have updated their “Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones” app with two new features to move the social network’s mobile user experience closer to what the user experience is on the desktop browser version.
Blackberry reports that these are some of the features that some of their customers have been asking for.
The first feature update for the Facebook 3.1 for Blackberry smartphones app is the ability to access Facebook Groups in the same manner users would a Web browser on a desktop. This feature will bring full Facebook Groups functionality allowing users to keep up to date with groups they are already members of and keep up to date with updates or comments accordingly.
Also added is the ability to give a “thumbs up” to individual comments posted by other users. The ability to “Like” individual comments was not available on previous versions of the app although it has been long available on the website.
Whether this will go a long way to making Facebook on Blackberry smartphones “sticky” remains to be seen. What is however clear is that Facebook needs to move quickly with their mobile strategy as this is without a doubt the device of choice for accessing its services by users around the world and in Africa.
The updated app will be available within 24 hours in Blackberry App world.
