The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said all unregistered SIM cards have been barred on the networks, adding those that have been disconnected deserve to lose their lines.
Speaking to reporters Tony Ojobo, the NCC’s director of public affairs, said the commission gave operators and subscribers sufficient time to register their lines.
“Any subscriber that didn’t register his or her line within the 27 months of registration does not deserve such line,” Ojobo said.
According to Ojobo, many subscribers who are clamouring for extension to the deadline are only doing so because they are hiding under anonymity, which he said poses a major security threat.
On the roles of some networks which did not provide short codes for their subscribers to confirm the registration status of their lines, Ojobo said such operators deserve to lose the affected subscribers.
HumanIPO has also learnt that disconnected subscribers are heading to the service centres of various telecoms companies to have their lines registered.
One of the affected subscribers, Jumi Stacy, told HumanIPO Etisalat disconnected her unregistered line but reconnected it after she registered it at the nearest Etisalat service centre.
HumanIPO reported reported yesterday there was uncertainty over the fate of unregistered lines with subscribers taking to social media to express their dissatisfaction over the inability of the NCC to take affirmative action.
