Mozambique launches Fax2mobile service

Mozambique’s fixed line operator, Mozambique Telecom or Telecomunicações de Moçambique (TDM), has launched a new service that will enable its subscribers receive faxes on [their] mobile phones from landlines.

Subscribers are handed codes, which can be used by contacts to fax messages directly to them. Fax messages then appear as text messages on the users’ mobile phones.

The company said that the service is to facilitate both businessmen and companies operating in the country.

Fax2email is also another digital solution offered by the Telco, which allows subscribes to receive faxes directly into their personal email inbox without having a fax machine.

When activated, faxes sent to the subscriber are targeted to the user’s email. Users have a traditional Fax2email number “say 2101xxxx or 2102xxxx” where senders fax their messages to.

The received fax is converted to a line of Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) or PDF file.

This file is an image of the fax, with the signatures and pictures to be sent as the original document.

The system then makes a check-up in the database to see if the user is registered with the Fax2email specific number, before the file is sent to the relevant email address.

TDM says that the services are soon to be expanded to the rest of Mozambique, including the rural areas.
