Rwandese Developers Standing out in African Mobile App Development

Rwanda has been recognized in many publications as one of the few places in the world where setting up a new business is easiest. With only over 2 million persons using their mobile phones only as a tool for communication, the opportunity for growth in the mobile industry is huge.

5 visionary final year students from a University in Rwanda joined together to form an IT company, Hehe Ltd, after attending an African IT initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2010.

They have since then achieved great heights in Mobile app development after being rated top among the best 25 mobile application developers in Africa. The team’s focus is solutions in developing SMS- based applications that support information services for the Public. Hehe limited has taken part in various international competitions which include the Pivot 25 (mobile applications and developer competition organized by M:lab East Africa), held in Nairobi, Kenya last July.

Information in your hands

Hehe Limited recently launched an application, Gihunda, which provides public access to information about where to find service providers and how to access the services both via web and mobile. The application which is meant to improve public service delivery also allows consumers to schedule appointments with service providers via mobile, conduct surveys and performance reports.

Also on their list of mobile applications is Yoboka, a SMS-based application that lets mobile users find business locations by sending a text message with their current location and desired business location. Yoboka in turn responds with instructions that dictate directions and information such as transport cost to the users.

The journey towards establishing regional and international operations looks set as they challenge the industry with mobile applications that offer mobile users reliable access to public information.

Feature: The iHills Network
