African health workers empowered with smartphones

Health workers across Sub-Saharan Africa have been equipped with Sony Xperia mobile devices for the improvement of the local community.

Sony Mobile, Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) have partnered to provide health workers with the devices.

The project is set to supply communities with a basis for healthy living, economic growth and long term sustainability as driven by the MVP.

HumanIPO reported earlier this year on MVP providing Ghanaians with mobile services.

Modern technologies will be utilised to provide community-based solutions for sustainability as part of MVPs on more than 15 sites in 10 countries across the continent since 2006.

Sony Mobile is backing the improvement of healthcare villages for which Xperia smartphones can be used on a daily basis for data collection regarding patients and advice towards health decisions via a cloud-based system.

The mobile company has upgraded the sponsored feature phones to smartphones, enabling access to an open-source Android app in support of the Earth Institute’s vision for better services.
