Chogoria Girls’ Wi-Fi boosting learning

Florah Njeri-ICT teacher

Wi-Fi has become a universal expectation to the students and teachers of Kenya’s Chogoria Girls High School in Meru County, Benson Njeru, the head of the ICT Department, has said.

According to Njeru, the Wi-Fi programme, initiated by the Ministry of Education last October, has assisted the entire school to further their studies.

“This technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet wirelessly is mostly used by students. Teachers also benefit from the initiative by conducting wide research on their topics to cover,” he said.

The school has three computer labs, two of them equipped with Wi-Fi and the other using modem to connect to the internet. Computer Studies is only compulsory from form one to form two, when students are allowed to select their favorite subjects.

Florah Njeri , one of the ICT teachers, said teachers do not have all the information required to instill in students, but Wi-Fi project has enabled them to gather more through research.

“As a teacher, you do not have all the information. We rely on Wi-Fi to get connected to various sites for information reach. This has enabled us perform well since the implementation of the project,” said Njeri.

She noted that students respond to the quick access to information that Wi-Fi makes possible, including access to academic information.

“We have nine computer studies students who will sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) this year,” she added.

The ICT department hopes to see all the computers connected to the internet and to increase the number of candidates taking computer studies in the next five years.
