Android users can now download an app from the Android market that lets them track their MPESA transactions from one location. M-Pesa is an award winning mobile money transfer service launched in Kenya, Tanzania and Afghanistan. In Kenya alone, the service had over 16 million subscribers as of November last year.
Dubbed pesaDroid, the application is capable of scanning your mobile’s SMS inbox for M-PESA transaction notifications to retrieve, sort and store them on a database on your phone. According to developer Felix Kiptum, the application works by analyzing and extracting information from an M-Pesa message when it comes in.
The application is essential especially for the millions of M-pesa users most of whom are small business entrepreneurs with the need to keep records of transactions with their customers. The premium version of the application allows its users to forward the notifications to their emails. PesaDroid currently has 500 users with less than 10% using the premium version which is a challenge Felix expects to meet with the addition of more features.
