Google joins race to launch internet pay-TV

Google is considering an internet pay-TV of its own, with the web giant already approaching media companies about licensing their content.

The Wall Street Journal reports that should Google follow through with its plans, it would be joining Intel, Sony and Apple who have been working on similar offerings.

“If launched, the Internet-TV services could have major implications for the traditional TV ecosystem, creating new competition for pay-TV operators that are already struggling to retain video subscribers,” read the WSJ.

Sources close the situation say that Google has made overtures to programmers as well in the recent months and has gone as far as demonstrating the product at least once.

Currently only Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are the existing providers of on-demand TV. However, latest efforts have been aimed at providing conventional channels online, thereby allowing consumers to flip through channels as with cable or on-demand programming.
