It has been well known that Apple computers are safe, in terms of virus infections. But in a change of wordings on their site, it seems the computers are susceptible.
Sopho News blog shows a change in the terms that Apple has used on its page, used to market their operating system (OS). The message that was originally there, confirmed to users that the machines cannot be infected by viruses:
It doesn’t get PC viruses.
A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. That’s thanks to built-in defenses in Mac OS X that keep you safe, without any work on your part.
But the change in those wordings yesterday, sparked an interest from the IT industry, bloggers and news sites globally:
It’s built to be safe.
Built-in defenses in OS X keep you safe from unknowingly downloading malicious software on your Mac.
In April this year, CNet reported that over 600,000 Macs had been infected by a Trojan called flashback. A Russian company said that they had succeeded to launch the virus into Mac machines. Apple has since moved in to provide security for the infection.
Maybe this hiccup advised the new wordings on the Apple site.
Mac’s OS long standing to be secure enough hasn’t stopped companies to develop antivirus for the machines. Even though this has been almost like a myth.
Companies like Norton and BitDefender have developed antivirus software for the Mac OS.
Although there hasn’t been any official communication from the most valuable company on the planet, Apple will definitely respond to the ripples caused by this new change, knowing this touches one of their strong selling points.
