A math app wins ZeTXT challenge in Zimbabwe

mTutor is an app that helps students and parents to perfect their math skills via SMS.

Douglas Chifetete and Prince Kaguda developed the math app as part of the ZeTXT app challenge held in Zimbabwe in association with ForgetMeNot Africa.

After months of developing, Econet Wireless and ForgetMeNot Africa finally announced the winners of the challenge.

“The ZeTXT Apps Challenge aimed to empower Zimbabwean developers to create new useful localised SMS applications through utilising the ForgetMeNot Optimiser Platform,” ForgetMeNot Africa said.

The winning app will now be integrated with the Econet Wireless service in Zimbabwe. The winner received a seed funding of US$2,000 and an iPad to help in developing the app further.

The other three winners received an Econet Wireless modem with a credit of US$100. They were:

2nd Place –MOJO (Taurai Benhura)
An SMS app to allow mobile subscribers to easily browse and apply for jobs. MOJO has partnered with a local employment agency to deliver the service, tapping into their data store of CV’s and complimenting their website.

3rd Place – SMSAssistant (Ndafara Tsamba)
The App aims to help organisations to utilize the SMS channel as a viable communication media.

4th Place – Musikawedu (Tanaka Mutakwa)
The Musikawedu app allows sellers to post adverts using SMS. It also allows users to create a network or community of classified advertisements.

ForgetMeNot Africa is a company that integrates SMS services with the Web. With their platform eTXT, users can easily use non-data phones to access some of the Internet services.

The company holds challenges all over Africa to develop apps that use their eTXT platform. Their past challenge was held in Kenya where Kenyan developers were awarded for their apps.
