The Unknown Runner documentary that has seeking funds through crowdfunding site kickstarter.com is headed for a flop having raised just 5 per cent of the required funds with only hours remaining of their deadline.

The documentary is planned to be a story about Kenyan top long distance runner Geoffrey Kipsang, but the producers were hoping to raise US$27500.

They hoped the documentary would act as a showcase of Kenyan talent and create a role model for the next generation.

To date the documentary has raised US$1,610 from 42 backers over a one month period despite the backing of legendary runner Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie.

HumanIPO reported earlier this month the documentary was hoping to ride on the successes of other projects from Kenya that have benefitted from the site including the just concluded BRCK that is building a backup generator for the internet by Ushahidi.

BRCK achieved 137 per cent of its target amount the Africa By Road documentary was funded to a tune of 323 per cent.

Seemingly technology projects prove most popular on the crowdfunding sites, with another project,Crowdring, a mobile organising tool, achieving 101 per cent in March.

HumanIPO reported earlier this week Canonical had turned to indiegogo for US$32 million of funding for its Ubuntu Edge project.

It is now unclear whether the Unknown Runner documentary will be made.
