The Wi-Fi Alliance has said the testing of a seamless Wi-Fi experience called the Passpoint will start soon. The technology helps mobile devices to access Wi-Fi from any hotspots while on the go.
In May this year, Ruckus Wireless began implementing the Passpoint technology in South Africa enabling users to access Internet seamlessly from various points.
So what’s the use of this when we have integrated Internet access from phones and external modems? More devices are now demanding Internet access and in the future, more devices will use the features.
Devices that are used for health for example would demand that they transmit data over Internet connection or record data using internet.
“As mobile users continue to increase their use of data-intensive applications, Passpoint eases service provider data traffic offload to Wi-Fi networks,” the Alliance said in a statement.
Alliance said: “The launch of the certification program means that there is finally a single industry-wide solution for seamless access to Wi-Fi mobile broadband, and providers can leverage Passpoint as a foundation to rapidly expand Wi-Fi roaming agreements.”
Edgar Figueroa, CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance exuded confidence in this new programme saying product manufacturers partnered with service providers to develop the Passpoint program in the Wi-Fi Alliance.
“Our organization has become a key collaboration forum driving Wi-Fi’s evolution in support of service providers,” he said.
The Wi-Fi Alliance is a global body that regulates the Wi-Fi industry, with the goal of driving adoption of high-speed wireless local area networking.
