Safaricom to motivate Kenyan Olympic athletes with Jackpot

Kenya’s leading telecommunications services provider, Safaricom, has announced a KSh10 million ($120,000) Olympic jackpot for the team that will represent the country in the 2012 London Marathon.

Gold medallists will receive KSh1 million ($12,000), Silver medallists KSh0.6 million ($7,000) while Bronze medallists will be awarded KSh.0.3 million ($3500). A top prize of 1 million shillings each will be presented to the team that will register a clean sweep of the Gold, Silver and Bronze at the podium in the Olympics.

“This team carries our individual and national dreams and aspirations for a brighter, more optimistic and more Kenyan future and this is what we at Safaricom are here to celebrate,” said Bob Collymore, Safaricom CEO at a dinner event organized in honour of the Olympics team.

Collymore added that 2012 is a great year technologically where the athletes can use technology to share their London experience with their fans by documenting every moment and every win through their phones, on Twitter and Facebook.

They made this possible by presenting each member of the team with a Samsung Galaxy Pocket and airtime worth KSh10,000 each, as they prepare to leave the country for the pre-Olympics training camp in the UK.

Besides the many cash rewards, Safaricom also partnered with the National Olympic Committee, in supporting a fundraising appeal for the team. Safaricom will not make any revenue from the funds collection, as funds raised will be directed towards the national team.
