Microblogging site Twitter’s Friday notice that it will review the rules governing its APIs – application programming interface — sent a convulsion among the site’s developers leaving many feeling spurned.
The developers are also worried about the direction the company might be heading.
Twitter’s stated it planned to make the rules stricter for its APIs to make sure the “core Twitter consumption experience” includes “a consistent set of products and tools.”
Twitter consumer product manager Michael Sippey while announcing the policy, discussed Twitter’s plans to broaden its “expanded tweets” program. The program allows user to preview images, stories and video linked within the tweets.
Sippey said Twitter has already began to enforce its Developer Rules of the Road with partners, such as in branding. He added that in the coming weeks, the company would be introducing stricter rules surrounding the use of Twitter API.
At the same time, Twitter has cancelled a cross-posting partnership with LinkedIn. To this effect, users of LinkedIn will however still be able to post updates to Twitter from the business network – “but not the other way round.”
HumanIPO has contacted Twitter for comments and will update this report.
