Vodafone has launched its fibre network that now connects of Ghana, Togo and Burkina Faso in the first of its kind project in West Africa.
Dubbed The Bolgatanga Cinkasse International Fibre Connectivity Project, the project is a collaboration between Vodafone Wholesale, a subsidiary of Vodafone Ghana, and Ghana’s Ministry of Communications, which began in November 2011 in Bolgatanga.
The project has taken eight months, and dignitaries from Togo, Burkina Faso and Ghana gathered in Cinkasse to mark its successful completion. The guest of honour was the secretary general of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Hamadoun Toure, who commended the exceptional teamwork that ensured completion of the project.
Vodafone Wholesale’s managing director Lucy J. Quist, said: “We partnered with the government on this project for one great reason – to bring to light a dream that has been on the drawing board for a while; a dream which has the ability to increase the investment opportunities in Ghana for international organizations and offer greater opportunities for growth.”
She added that Vodafone Wholesale was excited, owing to the fact that the project opens a new gateway for their customers to expand their business.
Vodafone Wholesale already has an extensive fibre network distribution all over Ghana, and provides bandwidth to Internet service providers and mobile networks. With the new connection to Togo and Burkina Faso, it will allow free flow of the internet bandwidth in Ghana to the rest of the West Africa region, turning the country into a cable gateway.
