With e-tax system, Uganda’s revenue authority would tax “all imported vehicles”

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has upgraded its e-tax system to now allow for taxation of imported vehicles.

The new development will see “all the imported vehicles taxed” to pave way for registration, as well as increase Ugandan tax authority’s income level.

URA acting Commissioner Henry Saka said that with the latest development, the authority would reduce the number of “disappearing files” as every transaction would now be conducted online.

This will increase URA’s revenue, he said.

The e-system, effective from Monday this week, will ensure all vehicles are registered including those initially registered — as well as the newly imported ones.

Saka further said that those willing to change ownership of their vehicles would have to give relevant information on the previous logbook and serial numbers for fresh registration.

This would verify if the vehicle reflects in the URA system.

Before the latest development, a buyer had to use the same logbook from the seller. The new law in place however allows for deregistration to facilitate re-registration of the new owner of the vehicle.

URA public and corporate affairs manager Sarah Banage explains how the system works: “After all vehicles have been imported, clearing agents will register them online in the URA Website. After meeting all the requirements, the system will get the unique acknowledgement number to the clearing agent. It will be copied and sent to the owner which will be used for registration track.”

After the vehicle registration,an auto-generated email is sent to the owner allowing the owner and clearing agent to know the status of a vehicle’s registration.

The registration book, commonly known as logbook, and number plate are afterwards issued within two days.

URA provides registration of boarded-off vehicles, third parties, issuing of duplicate documents, ambulances and freezer trucks registration as well as alteration of particulars of a motor vehicle.
