Afghanistan Emulating Africa with M-Paisa

War infested third world country Afghanistan in 2008 became the first country after Kenya to launch mobile money transfer service in the country. The service, dubbed M-Paisa, was initially adopted as a service for the Afghan police force to pay salaries securely via mobile rather than in cash.

M-Paisa is Afghanistan’s first mobile money transfer product launched by Roshan, a local mobile operator in partnership with Vodafone. The service makes use of SMS and an Interactive Voice response (IVR) system to transfer funds. Locals, most of who are illiterate can access the IVR system in various local languages.

And while you would expect a more advanced country and probably more countries in Africa other than Kenya and Tanzania to have adopted a mobile money transfer service for its efficiency and contribution to economic growth, it is in Afghanistan that people have been able to harness the use of the mobile phones despite the state of their economy. This way, they get to transcend the problems that face them such as the lack of infrastructure.

However, war continues to get in the way of the service due to the constant destroying of cell towers in various parts of the country.

M-Pesa in Kenya continues to be the most successful of all mobile money transfer services launched in other parts of the world such as Zpesa in Tanzania and Obopay in Senegal. Pakistan also has one of its own known as EasyPaisa.
