Mauritius is going through a revolutionary IT transformation and the latest move is its new pact with the United States in a move focused on promoting Internet use in entrepreneurship.
Just last month, Mauritius was embracing fast internet connection throughout the country. International telecom companies like Bharat Telecom, an Indian company is set to invest in the country.
A statement issued by the United States last week said: “The Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the Government of the United States intend to promote the implementation of the set of trade-related principles for the information and communication technology (ICT) services sector set forth below with respect to their bilateral trade relationship and in their respective trade negotiations with third countries.”
This pact makes Mauritius the first country in Africa to sign such a deal with the United States of America.
“Mauritius and the United States intend to cooperate with each other and third countries to enhance national regulatory capacity and support the expansion of ICT networks and services, which are powerful tools for promoting economic development,” the statement said.
Senior policy analyst from Google Winter Casey gave a thumbs up for the deal.
“As the Internet grows countries that are open to the free flow of goods and information will enable their businesses to trade, negotiate and advertise freely. In the long run, these solid business practices will lead to more exports and more jobs,” he said.
More Africa countries are seeing growth in their economy thanks to their embrace of Information and Communication Technology on mobile and Internet.
