Microsoft is set to acquire flat panel multi-touch interface developer, Perceptive Pixel.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made the announcement Monday during the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference.
Perceptive Pixel Inc (PPI) was founded in 2006 and develops large life-size touchscreen display for clear and larger image views. The firm also supplies software and active stylus pen solution for its 27 -, 55 – and 82-inch display screens.
Pixel came to the limelight during the 2008 U.S. presidential elections when CNN used it to show results on its interactive wall like screens. Earlier this year during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft partnered with Pixel to turn a giant HD display into the world’s large 82-inch touch screen display.
Kurt DelBene, president of the office division for Microsoft said in a statement that the acquisition of PPI allows Microsoft to draw on its complementary strengths.
“We’re excited to accelerate this market evolution,” DelBene said.
Microsoft hopes to combine its own technology with the large touch displays, which it says will produce high-end Windows 8-based PCs.
Meanwhile, the firm is set to launch its Windows 8 OS in August for PC, tablet and smartphone manufacturers. The Windows 8 OS will be available for consumers in October.
