Uganda’s top 50 brands to be polled via SMS

Ugandans will use short text messaging to vote for the top 50 brands. A joint venture between the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and Uganda’s government, the SMS polling aims at identifying the best brands to mark 50 years since the country gained independence.

The contest invites local companies from varied sectors that have been in existence for more than 10 years to participate — including engineering, energy, ICT, agriculture, tourism, transport, haulage, trade and commerce, mining, oil and gas and skills, health, education and professional organizations.

According to PSFU, companies interested in participating should download and complete application forms to be submitted before July 18.

Uganda’s government will use this first edition to recognise excelling companies in the country. PSFU says it will provide a free and fair exercise to demonstrate a favourable working business environment.

PSFU was launched in 1995 to foster economic growth in the business sector as well as to engage with the government in coming up with projects. Business Uganda Development Scheme (BUDS), Energy for Rural Transformation (ERT) are some of its implemented projects.

In May this year, a research by Brand Africa was released and South Africa MTN was voted as the most valuable brand in the continent for the second time. This was the second contest in Africa since the first branding ranking edition last year.

Absa (South Africa) NNPC (Nigeria) Eskom (South Africa) Shoprite (South Africa) Dangote (Nigeria) Woolworths (South Africa) Globacom (Nigeria) Pick n Pay (South Africa) and Vodacom South clinched the top 10 positions.

In the nation’s category South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Algeria, Angola, Tunisia, Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia were ranked in that order.
