Google introduces indoor maps for museums

Google is doing a lot with its maps. It recently released indoor maps for museums in North America adding to its 10,000 already catalogued indoor locations.

Google introduced the indoor mapping in November last year, helping users locate their way around airports and malls.

The search engine giant’s latest release for the Android platform includes interior mapping for 20 museums in America. This new development might see Google roll out more of its indoor mapping to its global users.

The indoor mapping for museums adds to the Google Art project that catalogued several museums including South African museums.

Yesterday, Google also introduced walking direction for over 44 African countries, bringing more relevance to the continent.

“To access the floor plans, simply open Google Maps on your Android phone or tablet and zoom in on the museum of interest,” Cedric Dupont, of Google Maps for Mobile team said.

“To find the museum, either search for it by name using the magnifying glass icon or, if you’re already there, use the “My location” feature to orient yourself. With the “My location” feature enabled you can even get indoor walking directions,” Cedric added.
