Three East African mobile applications have been selected as winners for the Climate Change competition organized by the U.S Department of State through their Apps4Africa platform. The Climate challenge is a regional competition that engages developers to come up with mobile and web based applications that are eco friendly.
Tanzania’s Grainy Bunch won the first slot bagging $15,000. Grainy Bunch is an application that allows farmers to operate a supply chain management system for grain harvest and distribution.
The second spot went to Mkulima Bora an application from Kenya. This is a revolutionary app that lets farmers know when to plat a certain crop. The app is loaded with meteorological data that helps farmers decide on the best planting season for their crops. The developers were awarded $7,000.
Agro Universe is a Ugandan brain child. This app which is available in web and mobile connects buyers and sellers of Agricultural products. This helps farmers and producers to market their goods. The third place slot received $3,000.
In their statement the U.S Department of State said, “This competition demonstrates that the United States is working with partners to bring together practitioners, policy-makers, and African technology innovators through programs such as the global Adaptation Partnership and Apps4Africa in order to highlight country-driven solutions to climate change adaptation in East Africa.”
Apps4Africa challenge consists of three African region competitions. That is East Africa, Central and West Africa, and Southern Africa heats. The West and Central Africa winners will be announced in December and Southern Africa winners will be unveiled in April this year.
Moses Kalema and Daniel Mumbere the first runners’ up, exuded confidence in their product and they were happy to be selected.
