Kenya’s communications regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), has released its quarterly report showing fibre optic subscriptions in Kenya rose by 118.3 percent in one year.
Last year, during the same period, the fibre optic subscription was at 17,850. In March this year, the subscription rose to 38,966.
Kenya has established four fibre optic cables making it one of the top countries with the fastest broadband. The fibre optic developers afterwards sell lines to smaller distributors who make it available to individuals and companies.
The prices of the fibre optic connections are still high in Kenya despite these positive developments. Companies have had to part with up to 40,000 Euros for 100Mbps connection.
The most favourable connection point for the general public still remains the USB 3G connections offered by majority of the mobile network operators. Safaricom leads with over 4.5 million subscriptions.
The Kenya ICT Board is reportedly putting up a master plan to double the internet users in Kenya over the next five years.
Speaking at an award ceremony for IT entrepreneurs, Andrew Lewela, Project Manager for BPOs at the Kenya ICT Board, said the country is now among top three nations in Africa in terms of ICT innovation.
