Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga will fly to China next week to sign a KSh6 billion (US$ 71 million) loan granted by China-based China Exim Bank for fibre-Optic infrastructure and e-government projects development.
Kenya’s ministry of information and communication permanent secretary Bitange Ndemo said Huawei will carry out the exercise in the country as that was “a condition” China made before offering the loan.
Huawei, a telecommunication company based in China, was awarded the opportunity of implementing the project in the Kenya to pave way for national Fibre-Optic and e-government project.
The countrywide exercise is set to kick off early next month.
Treasury Permanent Secretary Joseph Kinyua signed the provisional agreement with the China’s vice minister for commerce Cheen Jian in Nairobi Kenya earlier this month.
With the latest development, the country is set to benefit from Internet connection that will impact positively in the economy and social aspect.
Nairobi and other provinces including Rift Valley, Eastern, North Eastern, Eastern, Nyanza, Central, Coast and Western are set to benefit from the fIbre-optic connection.
Government strategy is to ensure there is a dependable Internet link for timely services to citizens in improving quality of services offered.
Kenya’s government, according to reports, has been supportive in implementation of ICT services. President Mwai Kibaki in 2007 unveiled Kenya ICT Board, as a state agency to improve e-goverment services.
