Despite its financial troubles, Nokia and its feature phones remain the most widely used mobile phones in the world with hundreds of millions of people in Africa still trusting the brand. This week, the giant microblogging site announced a native app that will run on the Finnish company’s feature phones.
In an announcement made yesterday, Brian Frank, who is a Product Manager at Twitter, stated, “Beginning today, millions of people who use Nokia Series 40 devices can download Twitter for Nokia in the Nokia Store.”
Nokia Series 40 operating system (Symbian) was first introduced in 1999 with the Nokia 7110 mobile phone. To date, there have been over 1.5 billion series 40 phones sold by Nokia making it on of the world’s most popular mobile platforms.
The most recent series 40 phones are the Nokia Asha range of phones.
The microblogging giant now hopes to bring Nokia users a fast, native Twitter experience for Series 40 feature phones. Thus far, series 40 users could only access the microblogging site via the mobile web browser.
The native app is available in Nokia’s app store.
