Kenya led the fray of countries embracing mobile market years ago and more countries in Africa are embracing the idea. The latest entry is Uganda’s Warid Telecom and Obopay. They have come together to launch money payment system in the country.
Obopay is a global mobile payment’s company that helps telecoms and other organization advance their mobile money transfer objectives. It has great presence in Africa, North America and Asia.
This new partnership follows hot on the heels of Warid Telecom’s launch of Waridpesa, in late December 2011, which is a cross network money transfer and payment service. “The technology revolution is transforming Uganda’s population in a profound way and this is leading to economic development,” said minister for ICT Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.
The service follows the Kenyan M-Pesa model and it is said to be a game changer in the mobile money stable in Uganda.
