Rwanda gets a new subscription-based TV services

Canal+Afrique, A French-owned pay TV, launched Tuesday last week in Rwanda’s business capital Kigali. Canal+Afrique network is a French language broadcaster with operations in West and Central Africa.

Canal+Afrique, a subsidiary of the French based Vivendi group, will offer “high-quality” digital television satellite technology.
According to the firm’s communication strategist Francoise Le Guennou-Remarck, the subscription-based television services wants to help the country shift from analogue to digital broadcasting.
“Comparing ourselves with the world, we are late on digital migration and our move will help us hasten the move from analogue,” She said.

The firm wants pay TV to be affordable to all and they have out their prices at minimal, she added.
A decoder goes for Rwf 55,000 (US$ 88). Two Canal+Afrique channels and 102 Canalsat channels cost Rwf 12,500 per month (US$ 20) . DSTV in the country costs Rwf 80,000 (US$ 128) and is the most preferred though a number of other users are on StarTimes pay TV .
The firm is now giving viewers in Rwanda a free dish on condition that they choose a subscription of their choice.

Since its entry into the market two months ago, Canal+ has around 600 subscribers. It hopes to garner over 10,000 subscribers by the end of this year.
