MTN spectrum application goes to public hearing

The Independent Communications of South Africa (ICASA) has set up a public hearing to decide whether the country’s largest mobile operator MTN should be allocated spectrum in the 2010MHz to 2015MHz band.

MTN has applied for the spectrum to increase its mobile data offerings, but rivals Vodacom, Cell C, Smile Communications and Neotel have already made their submissions of objection.

HumanIPO reported in July the spectrum band was among those in high demand, with ICASA councillor William Stucke saying any operators taking on more spectrum would face taking on obligations such as the rolled out more services to under-served areas.

The public hearing will take place on Wednesday, August 21, at ICASA’s headquarters in Sandton, Johannesburg.
