Following a series of condemnations over its reluctance to introduce mobile number portability (MNP) in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said it is ready to introduce the policy to promote competition.
The regulator insists MNP is just one of numerous features and innovative services which it plans to introduce into the nation’s booming telecoms sector and has assured subscribers in Nigeria of exciting times in 2013.
Reuben Muoka, NCC spokesman, said: “It was our desire to ensure that number portability is launched before the end of last year, but as it is, this was not possible. However, the NCC would ensure that it is launched in the first quarter of this year.”
He revealed the commission has appointed Interconnect Clearinghouse Limited to facilitate the upgrade of the networks and they had been working on the billing systems and interconnection of the various network service providers operating in Nigeria.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of the commission to ensure all providers meet up with the quality of service benchmark the commission has set for them.
