Kenya’s mLab announces applications for mobile training

mLab East Africa, a Kenya-based incubation hub for mobile-oriented startups, has announced its intake for the 2013 training to be held in the capital Nairobi.

The mobile training, which targets mobile developers from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Somalia, will last four months, with participants expected at the close of the programme to showcase inventions.

“East Africa has high potential to become a powerhouse for mobile innovations and mobile entrepreneurship. The region has already seen much growth of mobile related technologies such as mobile money,” mLab said.

“The result has been much interest and attention from investors, researchers, governments and development agencies to the region’s mobile innovation landscape.”

Participants, who mLab says will benefit from business training that will help them to monetize their products, are expected to cover technologies such as USSD, Android, J2me, PHP, MySQL, Mobile Web, IVR, User Experience Design, SMS, and Systems Design.

“The Lab expects that although some students may complete the course and go into relevant employment positions others will go into entrepreneurship with mobile innovations,” mLab said.

Last year, the training produced 23 graduands with some of the top mobile applications showcased including M-Verified, a document verification app and M-Tracker, a mobile vehicle tracker.

Participants will part with at least KSh10,000 (US$115), half of which is refundable. The application deadline is on January 20.
