Airtel Zambia ends 2012 with 4.6 million subscribers

Airtel Zambia ended 2012 on a successful note with more than 4.6 million subscribers to its networks and after expanding to include 140 areas previously without any mobile coverage.

“As we enter 2013, we would like to applaud customers and the nation for the overwhelming response by virtue of being the biggest mobile service provider. We closed the year on a firm position with more than 4.6 million subscribers and the contribution of rural Zambia cannot be taken away from this number,” said Chabuka Kawesha, Head of Corporate Communication and Government Relations.

The mobile network provider reported to have commissioned 1,100 sites by the end of last year, with more to come. Services such as Airtel Money were well received by the Zambian public.

Airtel Money is essentially mobile banking that is accessed through a money transaction platform license powered by the Bank of Zambia. Through the platform’s initial success, Kashewa was able to enter into bilateral agreements with commercial banks and other companies to increase the flexibility and service of the transaction platform.

Airtel Money is set to reach its one million subscriber milestone and Kashewa urged users not yet registered with the system to do so in order to be part of the milestone numbers.

Kashewa also thanked the Zambian Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) and the ministries of Trade and Industry as well as Finance and Commerce for their cooperation and providing of incentives for the sector last year.
