Facebook Messenger adds free Wi-Fi calling for iPhone users

Facebook has rolled out free Wi-Fi calling on Messenger for iPhone users after successful testing earlier this month, allowing US users to call each other at no cost.

A new free calling button has appeared on the app, with Facebook confirming to The Verge that users in the United States now have the capability.

Facebook started testing the free calling earlier this month. The new capability – which requires no update through the App Store – was added without an official launch this week, while the world’s attention was focused on the launch of its Graph Search.

The new feature will be especially welcome for people in areas with no mobile signal, and for those looking to save on airtime. Though there is no news yet on when the service may be rolled out to the rest of the world, it is a service that would be particularly welcome in Africa and developing countries.

Users wishing to make a call to another Messenger for iPhone user must open a conversation with that person, tap the “i” button and then click Free Call.
